Flashback Friday

This is Me and The College Kid when I was just a little Kit. Of course we're both all grown up now. I had forgotten that I used to be able to ride on his shoulder.

A Few More Baby Pictures

Mom used to save cardboard tubes and boxes as toys for Rudy and the other buns. They liked to toss cardboard stuff around and gnaw it to death.

One day I tried to play with one of Rudy's toys. Not being a rabbit, I didn't know how to do it very well.

Biting it doesn't help.

I think I'm stuck.

Mom finally rescued Me and comforted Me by letting Me take a nap in her lap.

My Story - Not Much More to Tell

There isn't much more to tell about how I came to my human family. But I do have a few more baby pictures to show.

Rudy, Mom's first rabbit. I've already introduced Rudy. When he was little he used to live in our basement. This really wasn't so bad because our house was built on the side of a hill. That meant that our basement door opened up into the yard. That side of the basement had big windows and lots of natural light. Mom kept the computer there and the human kids had homeschool there as well.

I had free reign of the house, but Rudy had to spend part of the day and all night in a hutch.

Rudy and Baby Rascal wanting to trade places. I was very interested in Rudy's hutch. After all, it was a box. It was a really neat see-through box with toys in it, a food bowl, and a water bottle which dripped water. I wanted very badly to go inside to explore.

Oddly, Rudy wasn't the least bit interested in being in there. In fact all he wanted was to get out. And sometimes he did get out. When Mom let him. He was only allowed out when he could be supervised, because even though Mom had rabbit-proofed that part of the basement, she still worried that he might gnaw on something that was dangerous. Dangerous for either him or it.

Everytime Rudy was out I would try to go explore his hutch. Mom always said no. One day, when Mom was cleaning out the tray underneath the hutch, I got in there anyway.

Rudy and Baby Rascal, trading places.

If you look closely under the hutch you can see a white blob of fluff. That's Rudy. He used to love to crawl under the hutch and tear up the newspaper Mom put under there.

Here is a picture of Rudy and Me playing Binky Ball.

Rudy and Rascal playing Binky Ball.

The rules of Binky Ball are:
1. The human throws the ball
2. The Cat runs after the ball
3. The rabbit binkies and runs around

Sometimes Rudy would run circles around Mom. She called it his "bunny dance."

Mom cried when Rudy went to the Rainbow Bridge. This last picture is of Me next to Rudy's memorial stone.

In memory of Rudy.

Of all the rabbits Mom has had, Rudy was my favorite.

My Story - Part 8

I told you about my first day, but my first night didn’t go so well. I was used to sleeping in a pile of brother and sisters, so of course I wanted to sleep with the humans who were so nice to me.

Dad had a different idea however. He took a towel and fixed it up into a comfy little bed in the bathroom near my litter box, then Dad put Me in it. But as soon as the house was dark and quite, I scampered into their bedroom and claw-climbed my way up onto their bed.

I was so glad to be there that I ran right up to walk on their heads and purr as loud as I could to let them know how happy I was. But Dad said, “No way. No Cats in the bed.” So he put Me back in the little bed they had made for Me and went back to bed. I scampered right back.

Dad got up again. This time he took my litter box down to the basement. Then he put my little kitty bed and my food and water bowls in another spot not too far from the litter box. Finally, he picked Me up, carried Me downstairs, and put Me in my bed. Then he went back upstairs and closed the basement door.

I didn’t want to be in the basement. I ran over to the stairs and tired to figure out how to climb up them, but they were too big and too steep. I started to cry. I cried and meowed and then waited. But nobody came. So I cried louder. I didn’t want to be down there! I kept on crying until finally I was so exhausted that I went to sleep in my little bed. But not before I had kept the entire family up for a very long time.

The next night Dad put Me downstairs again. This time I figured out how to jump up the stairs. But when I got to the top the door was still closed. So I starting meowing as long and as loud as I could. This time I got a response. Dad came. From the look on his face, I didn’t think things were going to go too well for Me.

He brought Me back downstairs, and took a card table to block the bottom of the stairs. Then he went back upstairs, closed the door behind him, and went back to bed.

This was simply too much. So I cried and I jumped and I tried my bestest to get over that barricade. Finally I wore myself out from trying so hard and went to bed. I was determined however, to not give up.

The next night I managed to find a spot in the barricade where I could squeeze through. As soon as I got to the top of the stairs I started meowing real loud. That brought Dad, but he only came to see how he could reinforce the barricade.

From then on, Dad and I had a contest going. Every night he would try a new arrangement for his barricade. Every morning he would find me at the top of the stairs. Of course he always knew what time of night I got there, because as soon as I scampered up the stairs to the door I let them know it!

This game went on for several weeks. Of course the bigger I got, the louder and stronger I got. Finally Dad said, “I give up.”

That night he didn’t barricade Me downstairs, and he didn’t close the basement door. After Mom and Dad went to bed, I climbed up the covers at the foot of their bed, curled up between them, and went to sleep. Dad never said a word about it and neither did I. In fact, I didn’t make a peep all night.

The next morning Dad said to Mom “Well, if we had just done that in the first place we could have been getting a good night‘s sleep all along.”

And that’s how my humans and I came to the understanding of Who is really in charge.

My Story - Part 7

When Dad first saw Me, he was very surprised.

“But ……. he’s a black Cat!”

“Not all Cats are tiger striped like Junior,” Mom laughed.

First they showed Me my new litter box and then they showed Me my food dish and my water bowl. The food dish was full of crunchy baby kibbles so I ate some. Then I had a drink. Then I set out to explore.

Mom and Dad were watching Me, very curious to see what I would do. Dad got out some string and wiggled it across the floor. I pounced! He pulled it. I chased! It was fun! I liked it here! We played pounce and chase for the longest time.

I was so busy having fun that I ignored something. I ignored and ignored it until I had a problem. And by then it was a very urgent problem, but……..I couldn’t remember where my new litter box was!

I started running. I had to find it! I ran around in circles, frantic circles, trying to remember where it was. As I ran and ran I hollered “Gotta go! Gotta go! Gotta go!!!” the loudest I could. But the humans didn't help Me. They just stood there staring at Me with very puzzled faces.

Finally I couldn’t stand it anymore. I dashed under the little table next to the sofa and with great relief, I pooped.

The humans gasped in shock. Silence. Mom thought “Uh oh. This isn't going to go over very well.”

Dad stared at Me. Mom was concerned because he was still getting used to Cats and might not take kindly to having his carpet pooped on. The longer he stared, the more concerned Mom got. He just stood there, looking at Me and my little pile. All of a sudden he started to laugh.

“He couldn’t remember where his litter box was!” he said. Mom laughed too, in relief. I just sat there and looked up at them. My new humans understood. That made Me very happy and I liked them very much.

So Dad showed Me my litter box again and Mom cleaned up my mess. And that was my first day in my new home.

My Story - Part 6

Life for Mom and Dad and their human kids went along Catless for quite awhile. It had been months and months since Junior disappeared, but Dad still wasn’t interested in getting another cat. One day Mom suggested they get a rabbit. Dad considered this for awhile and then agreed. So Mom bought Rudy.

Rudy, Rascal's bunny brother.

Rudy was a white, ruby-eyed French angora, (which is another name for an albino). He was 6 weeks old when Mom got him. He was very friendly, very curious, liked to be petted, and liked to sit in Mom’s lap. He had his own hutch, but he was allowed to run around because rabbits can be litter box trained. They are smart this way like Cats.

Dad like Rudy too and tried to play with him the same way he had played with Junior. But somehow it wasn’t the same.

One day Dad said to Mom, “Rabbits just don’t play like Cats, do they.“ Mom agreed. Dad didn’t say anything for awhile. Then finally he said, “We need another Cat.”

Mom got very excited on the inside, but on the outside she just said calmly, “Well, Mrs. G’s Cat had kittens not too long ago. I’ll ask her about them if you like. “ Dad agreed, so she did.

When Mrs. G’s kittens were old enough, Mrs. G put all six of them into a big cage, put the cage in the back of her suburban, and drove over so that Mom pick one. Dad had to be at work that day, so he gave very specific instructions to Mom for the choosing of their Cat. Dad wanted a boy, and he wanted him to have lots of personality.

Mrs. G’s kittens were beautiful. There were 4 girls and 2 boys. Mom thought the girls were the prettiest. They had beautiful markings and coloring. She was very, very tempted to pick one of them. But since Dad was a recently reformed Cat hater, she decided she’d better pick the one closest to what he asked for.

That left the two boys. A little black kitten with a long tail (Me!) and my brother, a black and white bi-color kitten. Mom watched the two of us play for a long time. We were both very feisty and friendly. As she watched she noticed that my brother liked to hiss. He would hiss whenever my sisters and I pounced on him. He would hiss when we chewed on his feet, tail, or ears. We didn’t mind if he hissed, we didn’t care one bit. We kept right on pouncing and attacking and having great fun. But Mom decided that a hissy-puss might not go over too well with Dad, so she chose Me.

Next time, I'll tell you what Dad said the first time he saw Me.........

My Baby Pictures

I asked Mom if we could update my blog today, but she said no. She said that I’ve been so lazy because of the heat that I haven’t done anything interesting.

Mom says these are the Dog Days of Summer. I say, if they’re for dogs then why bother to get up.

I told her that I knew everyone would be interested in some of my baby pictures. Everybody loves babies, especially kittens. She agreed. So here are a few of them:

At an early age I was training to be Mom's sewing helper.

I Have a New Brother

We have had rabbits for as long as I can remember. Until the last time we moved. Mom had to give her last rabbit away so now it is only Me.

This was my brother Rudy:

We were actually the same age, though he looks bigger than Me. That’s because he was a French angora, so his fur would grow long. He looked funny when he was little because his fur would stick straight out.

This is Rudy hiding from Mom. He didn’t want to go back in his hutch.

He chewed the corner of an entire stack of computer printer paper. In our house “my rabbit ate my homework” was a valid excuse.

Rudy and I grew up together so we were like brothers.

I missed Rudy when he gone. Rabbits don’t live as long as Cats.

This is Cricket:

She was already grown up when she came to live with us. She had absolutely no respect for Cats. When I tried to make friends she grunted and charged Me. She would run Me over if I got in her way. So I stayed out of her way.

This is Miss Ivy and Me:

She is furrier because she is an English angora. She and her brother Tibber were polite to Me, but they liked each other better.

I like rabbits because they don’t want the cat food or the kitty treats. They eat things no one else wants, like vegetables and hay.

Now we have no more rabbits. So I decided to adopt a little brother. His name is Obi-Bun Kenobi. He lives on the right side of my blog. You passed him as you scrolled down the screen. He is a virtual little brother, but he is a brother just the same.
