Good Days Bad Days

Rascal's mom here. We haven't thought about cat blogging much, but I wanted to give you all an update on Rascal. Here's still with us, having his good days and his bad ones.

On the good days he wants to go out and make his rounds. He knows where the mice and chipmunks hang out, so he can usually be found there.

He knows where the safe and comfy catnap spots are.

And he's ever faithful to accompany me when I go out to the garden, and keep me company while I do various gardening chores.

On bad days he doesn't want to go out, doesn't want to eat, doesn't want to be bothered. On days like that we debate whether or not to take him to see Dr. C. We know that in all likelihood, if we take him, he probably won't come home again. It's hard to be brave enough to face that. His annual check-up is in August and hopefully he can make it for that.

Sometimes we wonder how he keeps going. He's all skin and bones and pretty fussy about food. But as long as his good days outweigh his bad, we'll hang in there with him. We hope that when his time comes, he'll peacefully fall asleep and never wake up. If he does need help to cross the Rainbow Bridge, we just hope we'll know when he's ready.

It is a very difficult time. We were there with Georgia for different reasons and it's hard to think about letting them go when they get such pleasure out of some of their days. Cats are very graceful. I have no doubt that when the time comes you will know.

Yes, thanks for posting an update - I think of Rascal (and you) so often and have been wondering how things are going. It's good that he still can get outside and have happy time - XOX T.

One of the vets from Emergency Vets (Animal Planet) recommended doing the following so you know when it is time to say goodbye...

make a list of your pet's favorite things to do...and when you notice that your pet isn't doing them on a consistent basis, then it's time.

Hugs and Prayers!

I hope his good days outweigh the bad ones for a long time.

We know how you're feeling. FH and I had to help our sweet Confetti over the bridge last Thursday. It was so sudden since we didn't even know she was sick. We were blessed to have two months more than what the vets thought she could handle...it was a gift.

Now we're back to focusing on Castor's health and figuring out how to keep him comfortable, happy, and as healthy as we can.

Big hugs to you, your DH, and Rascal. We have more if you need them.

Hi Leigh
The hardest time is whether to help a much love pet over the rainbow bridge. I feel for you. Our rule of thumb is if they are till enjoying life to keep on going but we had two dogs that when they went we realised they had been allowed to go on too long. Tough times. I feel for you. And Rascal as he is my surrogate cat as I can't have one.
love Helen

Star says, "The Teenage Mutant Ninja Kitty Horde will be purring for you, specially since you look like me. I am a notorious ninja, excellent with my paw-work. I remember when Nicodemus the Evile Anti-Koala passed away. He just stopped eating and then stopped drinking and just stayed in mom's bathroom (it had radiant heat so it was waaaarm, I wish her new one did!) all the the time."

"Mom would hold him and check to see how he felt but he didn't want to go to the vet. She knew when Samantha wanted to go because when she and our old dad talked with each other and the vet and decided to take her to the vet, she got out of hiding and jumped on the bed. Nicky died laying on a towel on mom's chest. Quietly, going to sleep, after all of us had gone to say good-bye to him and the Horde was pretty big then. I think you'll know. I think he'll tell you."

"Oh btw, mom said to tell you that most of us talk. Christopher, who has already crossed the bridge, talked the most. He said 'me-out', 'me-in', 'mom', 'nee-ooow', 'me-eat' and 'ne-oo' plus some more I can't remember.

Oh, Leigh...
We got back from Black Sheep and just now am catching up with friends. I can see in the photos that Rascal is thin and perhaps the disease is winning now.
As long, as you say, his good days outweigh his bad and there is joy in his life, I know he will keep going.
We tend to try to use the "Three Things" guidelines - pick three of Rascal's favorite things in life. When he stops doing those three things, you know it will be time to help him to the Bridge. I say that, but know full well my heart does other.
You and Rascal are in our thoughts and prayers...
